A Look at .net and .org Domain Sales

Next to .com’s, .org and .net domains are 2 of the most recognizable extensions among Internet users. People may choose alternate domain extensions for any number of reasons, besides price or availability. For instance, .org names are usually associated with nonprofit organizations such as Goodwill.org. Meanwhile, .net domains were originally intended to be a more general TLD (whereas .com was meant to be used for commercial websites), although the extension may have lost steam as newer alternative TLDs have launched.

Big sales are few and far between for these legacy TLDs, however, below is a list of notable .org and .net sales, and what’s going on with them now:

Sudoku.net @ 52,863 USD on 2019-10-10

The most recent domain sale on this list currently points to an online Sudoku game. If you’re a fan of the math puzzle game and have a few minutes (or more) to spare, be sure to check out the site!

Horseracing.net @ 60,000 USD on 2019-07-01

Also recently, this domain points to a horse racing website, as the name suggests. After a quick look, it appears there’s plenty of information on upcoming races, odds, and news for those interested.

Casinos.org @ 400,000 USD on 2019-06-19

This sale made headlines this year as one of the largest recorded .org sales, and is currently the highest this year. It’s interesting to note that the highest recorded .org sale, according to NameBio.com, is Poker.org at $1M. It appears that you need login credentials to access Casinos.org, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens next with the domain.

Q.org @ 500,000 USD on 2018-10-21

Single-letter domains in any extension are rare and coveted. The domain currently points to a cryptocurrency website that provides info about “Q”. According to Q.org, “Q is a decentralized cryptocurrency that we have been developing for years.”

08.net @ 87,000 USD on 2018-09-30

For buyers who are interested, the domain points to a sales landing page.

Star.org @ 225,000 USD on 2018-03-01

There isn’t currently a developed website here, but with a short, dictionary word name, it’ll be interesting to see what the owner does with this domain.

These sales would likely be considered outliers. For a more general look at domain valuation and pricing, check out our domain pricing guide here.
