Domains in the News: Better.com, Affirm.com, Wish.com and Slack.com

December is upon us and there were no shortage of great domains in the news.

Better.com Raises $200M in Series D

Better.com is “a comprehensive homeownership journey platform that utilizes technology to change the way people buy and own a home.”

This FinTech/Real Estate platform sets out to democratize the home-financing ecosystem, making the mortgage process simpler and less time-consuming. They also claim to eliminate unnecessary fees, so clients can get the best available rates.

Given the current state of the real estate market, especially in large metropolitan areas, this could serve as a handy tool for anyone looking to buy or refinance a home.

The company raised $200M in Series D, with a total of $405M raised overall.

Turning to the domain name itself, it’s a short, single, English, dictionary word, .com domain. This means it’s considered more valuable than longer, non .com domains. The word also has a positive connotation, adding to its value. The domain was originally registered on 1996-11-20 and appears to have been previously owned by various different parties. A look at historical records shows that the domain once (in 2006) pointed to a website that offered “better deals” on various goods:

Affirm.com Raises $1.5B

Simply put, Affirm is the “buy now, pay later” solution that’s been making waves all over the news

The company raised $500M in its most recent round of funding, with a total of $1.5B raised overall so far

This FinTech company “offers installment loans to consumers at the point of sale” so that customers can buy what they want now and make simple monthly payments for what they purchase.

Again, we have another short, single, English, dictionary word, .com domain. “Affirm” also has a positive connotation. All of these factors contribute to making it a premium domain. It was initially registered on 1999-12-02 and may have belonged to various individuals in the past. Although the site has undergone a few nips and tucks, the domain seems to have pointed to a “payment solution” service as far back as 2013:

Wish.com Announces IPO Set for December

Any online shopping aficionado will likely be aware of Wish.com. It’s an e-commerce platform known for offering a variety of goods at affordable prices.

They raised $300M in their most recent fundraising series, with a total of $2.1B raised overall

The company recently made headlines by announcing its upcoming IPO.

This premium domain features a single, English, dictionary word and a .com extension. The name is short and easy to remember. It was initially registered on 1995-01-03. Back in 2001, the domain pointed to an online shopping site as well:

Slack.com Acquired by Salesforce in $27.7B Megadeal

The big news here was that Slack.com was acquired by Salesforce in a $27.7 billion megadeal.

Many remote workers are familiar with Slack – a platform that allows teams to connect and communicate effectively. With lockdowns continuing globally, it’s no surprise Slack has picked up steam for remote teams.

This premium domain features a single, 5-letter, English, dictionary word and a .com extension. The domain was registered on 1992-10-21 and once (in 2012) featured “David’s Web Page”:
