A Look at the Top Sales of 2021 So Far

Earlier this year we wrote that 2021 might just be the best year ever for domain name sales and we see no reason to believe that won’t be the case. There have been a number of high profile publicly announced sales, but most sales are still private. The largest sale of the year was probably Home.com and Ass.com reportedly sold for $6m. Just in the past week we’ve learned of several private sales that might have placed in the top 10 if they were public: Front.com, Universal.com, Bulletin.com, and Cool.com all were reportedly sold. Single word .com domains are the hottest segment of the market.  It’s been a long time coming, but companies have recognized the value of having the best possible domain.

Here are the top 10 public sales reported by DNJournal:

Christmas.com    $3,150,000

The domain has been developed into a holiday and seasonal decor site.  Currently it features decor for the 4th of July.

Angel.com    $2,000,000
Angel.com is a crowd funding site for family friendly TV, web shows and movies.

Exodus.com    $1,945,000
Exodus.com is now a crypto wallet allowing you to send, receive and exchange various forms of crypto.

Meme.com    $1,250,000
Meme.com is still under development, but it promises to be the “first project that builds a platform to measure the value of memes, using different crypto incentives that help fund meme creators.”

eBike.com    $1,008,900

eBike.com currently forwards to Bosch.com.  Bosch, a huge multinational company, makes ebike systems among many other things.  Perhaps they are going to move further into the space?

SelfMade.com    $977,500
STOFF & STIL bought SelfMade.com and it looks as though they are going to rebrand.  They are a large chain of European “do it yourself” stores.

Recursion.com    $904,000
They describe themselves as “a clinical-stage biotechnology company decoding biology by integrating technological innovations across biology, chemistry, automation, data science and engineering to industrialize drug discovery.”  A great name and some lofty goals.

GoBet.com    $850,000
Nothing here yet.

Tattoo.com    $812,000
Currently a lifestyle site focused on tattoos, tattoo artists, and music.

Poker.net    $750,000
Just a parked page right now.

Will 2021 be the Biggest Year Ever for Domains?

Normally I’m not one for hyperbole, but the way 2021 has started it seems as though 2021 might be one of the biggest years ever for sales in the domain name secondary market. So far we’ve seen what was likely one of the biggest domain sales ever when Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation bought Home.com (although the exact amount may never be known), Christmas.com was sold for over $3 million and just yesterday Bird.com and Fish.com were reportedly bought at auction by the same buyer for over $4.5 million (Update: there is an ongoing legal battle over the auction of Bird.com and Fish.com).  Here at DomainAgents, we’ve already brokered several six figure deals this year and just in terms of number of offers, February has been one of our busiest months ever.

So what’s going on?  There are likely a number of things at play.  Right now there is a lot of optimism about the end of the pandemic and the hope of a big recovery by the end of the year.  Tech companies, who often are big buyers of premium domains, have done particularly well during the pandemic as more activity has been forced online. Low interest rates and stimulus spending by governments around the world have made some leery about traditionally safe investments like government bonds and cash is cheap. Relatedly, the price of Bitcoin has also exploded as businesses and people look for other places to put their money.

All in all, it may be something of a perfect storm. One advantage that domains have over some other alternative assets is that they have intrinsic utility. As online presence becomes more and more important, your domain becomes more and more important as well.  That value will outlast any post-pandemic boom or bust.

Making predictions is particularly difficult right now, but it definitely looks like we’re in for a wild ride.

DomainAgents 2020 Survey Results

2020 was… a year. In November we asked how the year was going for you and thankfully, less than 10% said it had gone terribly overall, but I’m sure we all had at least some terrible times this year, so good riddance 2020 and let’s hope 2021 goes better!

We did manage to make 2020 better for one person at least as David E. of Oklahoma was drawn as the winner of the Xbox Series X! He and his son have been enjoying it quite a bit!

There were lots of interesting responses in the survey. Take a look:

We’re bullish on domains in 2021 and we hope it is a great year for you too!

September 2020 News Roundup: NamesCon.Online and Domain Sales

This month’s news roundup is short, sweet, and all about NamesCon plus a few noteworthy sales.

NamesCon Recap:

NamesCon had its first global online event earlier this month, running from September 9 – Friday, September 11. From all of the feedback, it was a success filled with opportunities to network and learn more about the domain industry through expert sessions, talks, and panels.

Want more details? Here are just a few places to get started

Domain Sales:

Uno.com

Uno.com, a 3-letter .com domain, sold for 7 figures in a financed deal. The domain points to a simple website with some colourful shapes in the background, and the words “Coming Soon” front and centre.

Micro.com

Micro.com is a great domain, so it’s no wonder it sold in the high 6-figures in a financed deal. The domain currently points to an empty Shopify page, and there’s no information as to the new owner of the domain.

PirateBay.org

We sometimes gloss over other extensions in favour of .com sales, but this month is different. PirateBay.org sold for 50,000 USD on 2020-09-15 via an auction at DropCatch.com. If the sale goes smoothly and closes as expected, this will be one of the biggest .org sales on record, just after Ready.org, which reportedly sold for $169,888 on 2020-03-11 and Healthyamericans.org which sold for $55,000 USD on 2020-03-11.
