2019’s Top Domain Sales

2019 was a strong year for the domain industry, highlighted by a market that continues to show growth. With the help of the reliable reporting of Ron Jackson at DNJournal.com, DomainAgents has put together a list of Top Domain Name Sales of 2019.  It’s important to remember that most domain name sales are not reported publicly. DomainAgents, for example, does not report sales made through our platform, so there are many sales, perhaps even sales that would have usurped the ones below that are not known currently.

Top 7-Figure or More .com Domain Name Sales of 2019:

These were the top domain name sales of 2019 thus far. All of these broke the 7-figure sales mark, while one went beyond and hit the elusive 8-figure mark.

  1. Voice.com for $30,000,000 on 6/19/19
Unsurprisingly, this year’s chart is topped by a single, English dictionary word domain. Single, English dictionary word domains are a premium asset and considered worth the investment by companies such as Block.one, the buyer of the domain. They are a self-proclaimed “leader in providing high-performance blockchain solutions.”

  2. California.com for $3,000,000 on 1/23/19
Looking to escape the winter blues? If you’re headed to California, this might be a great website to check out for sightseeing ideas and restaurant tips. Sitting at the number 2 spot is California.com, another single word domain that is only a few letters (five, to be exact) longer than Voice.com.

  3. EKO.com for $1,500,000 on 10/23/19
This domain is only 3 letters long, however, not an English dictionary word. While still quite valuable ($1.5M is still an incredible sale), the difference here between EKO.com and Voice.com/California.com is worth noting.

  4. TM.com for $1,250,000 on 11/20/19
At $1.25M is TM.com, a 2-letter domain name. 2-letter domains are considered amonst the highest premium names, so it looks like the undisclosed buyer get a great deal from seller, TM Advertising.

  5. RX.com for $1,000,000 on 7/31/19
Another 2-letter domain name sale sits in the top 5 this year. RX.com sold for $1M back in July 2019. It was reported that domain investor Brent Oxley bought the domain, potentially for investment purposes.

3 Memorable Non .com Sales:

Sometimes, we get caught up in record-breaking .com domain sales and forget that there are noteworthy non .com extension sales as well. Big sales in other extensions are not as common, but there were a few that made the news this year. Let’s dive right in!

  1. Casinos.org for $400,000 on 6/19/19

This was the 16th highest sale overall in 2019, but tops our non .com list at $400K. DomainAgents has seen an upward trend in betting and gambling related domains in general with sports betting becoming legal in many US states this year.

  1. Free.games for $335,000 on 5/29/19

Sitting at 19th in 2019’s year-to-date chart, Free.games takes home second place in our non .com chart-topping list at $335K. Considered an outlier, this was the talk of the town when it went through.

  1. Viajes.es for €147,000 = $166,110 on 7/10/19

This is another outlier in our list! First, viajes is a Spanish word (meaning “travels” in English), rather than an English one. Second, it’s a record-breaking .es extension sale. This sits at number 29 in the overall year-to-date chart, but is third overall in our non .com list.

Noteworthy “Trending” Domain Sales in 2019

Earlier in the year, DomainAgents noticed increased interest in marijuana, gambling, and blockchain related domains. Below are domain name sales demonstrating these growing trends.

  1. BettingOdds.com for £390,000 = $487,500 on 7/10/19
This 2-word, gambling related domain was purchased by GamingUSA Group.

  2. Signet.com for $300,000
This domain was acquired by Signature Bank for a digital payment platform which will leverage blockchain technology. The domain was sold in 2018, however, the platform reportedly didn’t launch until 2019.
  1. AGLab.com for $7,500, HireTimes.com for $5,000, and GotWeed.ca for $4,999
These 3 marijuana-related, end-user domain sales may not be record-breaking, but they show the uptick in general interest in cannabis/marijuana domains. AGLab.com, HireTimes.com (a play-on-words domain), and GotWeed.ca were purchased by various cannabis companies.  Last year, Kush.com sold for $500,000.
