Why We Love Domains

They say that a relationship can fall victim to the “7 year itch”, but DomainAgents has been around for 7 years now and we still love domains.  Here are just some of the reasons!

Instant Credibility

Beyond just looking professional, having your own domain is almost a requirement for any business in this day and age. As we’ve written before, your domain is your brand. Having a quality domain lends instant credibility and evens the playing field. Any business, from a startup to a multinational corporation, can pursue an exact match domain or category killer domain and have a strong voice immediately. A small tech startup can acquire a great strategic domain and quickly establish themselves as a leader in a new field like the blockchain.

A solid domain that reflects your services and brand inspires confidence in your clientele and boosts credibility.  Even if they don’t know that domains can be worth millions of dollars, people do recognize that a good domain is hard to get and that it’s unlikely that a fly by night operation is using a short .com domain.

Domains = Valuable Digital Assets

On a fundamental level, domain names are “digital addresses” that allow us to navigate through the Internet without having to memorize random strings of numbers.  That’s why they are commonly compared to real estate and like real estate, they hold and can increase in value.

A few notable examples of the value domains can have include Voice.com, which MicroStrategy famously sold to Block.one for $30M earlier this month, as well as We.com which sold for $8M in 2015. Escrow.com has recently started publishing quarterly reports showing that domains are a solid appreciating asset.

Even if the original plan for a name doesn’t pan out, quality domain names hold their value over time, or can be resold for more than what they were purchased for in optimal market conditions.  Unlike marketing dollars that are gone when a campaign ends, money invested into a domain is money invested into an asset with long term value.

Your Domain, Your House, Your Rules

Domain names provide a direct, controlled channel to connect customers and businesses, even amongst the barrage of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn and Instagram.

There have also been growing concerns from digital marketers about the ways that platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have changed over the years. What was once a place to connect with and reach new customers has now become a game of who can pay the most to have their company seen by the highest volume of prospects, even if those people are already following you.

Further, with social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram facing increased scrutiny, the future direction of these platforms is unknown. Leaving the fate of your company in another party’s hands is something to be avoided whenever possible.

All in all, it’s not just a name – a strong domain continues to be a valuable marketing tool and digital asset.
