June News Roundup: What’s Hot in .com’s, Domaining in Europe, and .org Price Hikes

June has been a big month for the domain industry! Below is a roundup of notable stories from the past month, including a record-breaking cash sale and a global domaining event set in beautiful Portugal.

It’s still widely accepted that .com domains are king, and here are just a few reasons why.

It seems that everyone has been abuzz about the $30M sale of Voice.com. Read our take on it here.

In this article, OnlineDomain.com author Konstantinos Zournas runs through the numbers and explains why having a .com is essential to get more funding for startups.

It seems there’s something to this correlation between having a .com and funding as Bus.com recently announced they’ve raised nearly $15 million USD in additional venture funding as they continue to make waves in the bus charter industry.

Meanwhile, more statistics show that while .com domains are secondary in ICANN’s other four regions (Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and Europe), the extension still dominates in North America. Here’s why.

.org Price Hikes?

It wasn’t too long ago that the domain industry was thrown for a loop when news came out about Verisign increasing fees for .com domains. It seems .org domains aren’t too far behind as ICANN has just renewed the .org Registry Agreement with Public Interest Registry (PIR), removing price caps. There are no announced hikes yet, but some sort of increase is very likely.

Here’s to a hot start to the summer!
